At The Gas Station….

I was at the gas station the other day. It was about 8:30AM and a nice brisk 9 degrees F.  As I am pumping my gas freezing my ass off, I notice this older man who is raiding all the trashes trying to get cans to return for money.  Now he drove a car there because I noticed him load them into his car afterwards.  Is this guy that broke that he needs to check for cans with it freezing out???  I felt like tossing him a few dollars and telling him to save his time and stay warm but alas I didn’t.
This reminds me of some mornings before I head to work at 5AM and there is this car from NH that raids our recycling bins for cans for change.  Yes maybe he does collect 20-30 bucks but couldn’t he just work at McDonalds for a few hours and make that too and not freeze and pick through people’s trash??  It’s not like he is saving the environment because we have the cans in our recycling.
You are probably wondering why I don’t return my deposits aren’t you??  Well the answer is I only have like 5-10 cans a month and I don’t want to store them around forever.  Also I don’t want to waste the time going to the store to return them and probably the number one reason is I am lazy!

  1. Sounds very counterproductive to me. With the cost of gas I don't see how it's profitable to drive around looking for cans.

  2. All through high school I had to help my mom collect cans for gas money. We ate at soup kitchens and my little brother and sister and I slept on the floor next to the radiator in my mothers room because we couldn't afford to run the heat in the whole house. Times are still tough all across these wonderful United States of ours so it makes sense that you'd see something like that today.

  3. Excellent rant. Gas is way too expensive to be doing it that way. Now if he had been riding around on a bike to collect cans, that I could see being more worth while.
